The Power Mobility Training Tool: Developing Power Mobility Training Programs for Children with Multiple, Severe Impairments

Abstract:

Children with severe motor impairments who also have deficits in communication, cognition, vision, and other areas, are often not considered to be candidates for power mobility use. Research suggests, however, that power mobility training may be beneficial for these children even though they may never become community drivers. This Webinar will introduce the Power Mobility Training Tool (PMTT), an observational tool designed to assist clinicians in developing power mobility training programs for children who have multiple, severe impairments. PMTT item administration and scoring will be detailed. Clinical application of PMTT findings will be illustrated through case-based examples pertaining to the development of individualized beginning power mobility programs for specific children.

Biography

Dr. Kenyon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Dr. Kenyon heads the Grand Valley Power Mobility Project, an inter-professional research project that provides power mobility training for children with multiple, severe disabilities.  Dr. Kenyon presents internationally on topics related to pediatric physical therapist practice and has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters pertaining to topics in pediatrics.
