Abstract:

Assistive technology (AT) makers can create low-cost, customized solutions, but knowing which tools and supplies to start with is often the biggest barrier to entry. In this multi-part webinar series, we make getting started more approachable! Join us for our first session that introduces the essential tools, materials, and supplies commonly used in AT fabrication, including soldering equipment, wires, and connectors of different types. Presenters will explain what each item is used for, how to select quality options at different budget levels, and how to use them safely. Attendees will leave with a foundational understanding of part of the maker toolkit and a practical shopping list to prepare for the live-build session that follows, in which participants will fabricate a piece of AT chosen by audience participation during the session.
