Title: Wheelchair Skills Assessment and Training: An Evidence-Based Approach

Speaker: Lee Kirby, MD, FRCPC

Abstract: Wheelchair-skills training is one of the four steps in wheelchair service provision recommended by the 2023 Wheelchair Provision Guidelines of the World Health Organization. In this webinar, the set of free online resources comprising the Wheelchair Skills Program will be reviewed. These resources include the Wheelchair Skills Test (WST) and its questionnaire version (WST-Q), as well as the Wheelchair Skills Training Program (WSTP).

The research evidence in support of these assessment and training protocols is now extensive (over 200 papers in the peer-reviewed literature). How these simple protocols can be implemented in clinical practice will be demonstrated.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of session, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the WHO wheelchair-service-delivery process.

  2. Describe the components of the Wheelchair Skills Program (WSP) and the extent of research evidence in support of it.

  3. Describe how the WSP assessment and training protocols can be implemented in their own settings.

Pricing: Free for RESNA members; $45 for non-members
